A general method is given to construct realizations of relativistic elementary particles. It is shown that the Dirac-Fierz-Pauli equations are simply the functional expressions of the equivalence mappings relating some of these realizations. The introduction of the electromagnetic interaction is analyzed; the usual method leads to compatible algebraic operations even for spin- 1 particles. The mathematical and physical difficulties inherent to that procedure can be avoided by means of a natural generalization of the two- component electron theory of Feynman and Gell-Mann. (auth)
