Recent experiences in diagnostics and incipient failure detection at Westinghouse

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4100188
Over the past several years, Westinghouse has developed several instrument systems for the acquisition and analysis of data for diagnostics and incipient failure detection. Primary motivation for this work is to improve NSSS availability through the detection of malfunctions at their inception. These systems encompass two major areas: (1) Acoustic Monitoring Systems for detection and location of crack propagation and leaks in the primary system pressure boundary of PWRs, and (2) Vibration Monitoring Systems for detection of changes in vibrational characteristics of the major components of Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) and Balance of Plant (BOP). Some of the features of the system and in-plant experience are summarized. (auth)
