A method for increasing the elongation of linear polyethylene is outlined in which a small amount of a substance selected from rubber accelerators and vulcanizing agents containing one of the elements sulfur, selenium, or tellurium and a sulfonyl hydrazide is incorporated into the polymer, and the resulting mixture is exposed to highenergy ionizing radiation to a dose of 10/sup 6/ to 10/sup 8/ rep and then heated to 140 to 160 deg C for 1/2 to 1 hr. This method is illustrated by an example in which an insulated wire is prepared, and tables are presented showing the effects of oven aging time and irradiation dosage on the properties of irradiated Marlex.
