The importance of the BF/sub 3/ proportional counter in reactor control, particularly start-up and shut-down, is pointed out, and its characteristics are discussed in detail. The discussion begins with general considerations in detection of neutron flux by BF/sub 3/ counters and their sensitivity to neutrons. The discussion continues then with the gas multiplication factor, width of the voltage pulse at the counter output, and counting characteristics. Finally, collection time, sensitivity, and useful life of the BF/sub 3/ proportional counter are discussed. (T.R.H.)
