ALPHA-PARTICLE DECAY OF THE 15.1 MEV STATE IN $sup 12$C

Journal Article · · Proc. Roy. Soc. (London)
A search was carried out for the alpha decay of the 15.1Mev state in C/ sup 12/. The state was made by the B/sup 10/(He/sup 3/,p)C /sup 1/ s/sup 2/ reaction. The protons feeding the 15.1-Mev state were seen in proton singles spectra and in coincidence with 15.1-Mev gamma rays, but none were seen in coincidence with alpha particles. Comparison with a nearby state known to decay virtually solely by alpha particles established that the 15.1-Mev state decays by alpha emission less than 20% of the time. Combining this result with the results of gamma resonance scattering it was found that GAMMA /sub i < 15 ev. The sensitivity of the experiment was limited by a continuum from the break-up of the B/sup 10/ + He/sup 3/ system. (auth)
