In view of the semiconducting properties of some of the higher Th sulfides, the interaction of ThO/sub 2/ with H/sub 2/S was investigated, using a 99.8% pure oxide in a simple apparatus. The ThO/sub 2/ was heated in a porcelain boat placed in a quartz tube through which a stream of H/sub 2/S was flowing. Analysis of the sulfidization products obtained at various temperatures revealed that at 600 deg C the S content increases sharply, then gradually approaches the value of ThS/sub 1.7/. Between 900 and 1100 deg the oxysulfide ThOS was formed. Complete removal of O and formation of the pure sulfide ThS/sub 1.7/ was reached only at 1200 to 1300 deg C. X-ray-diffraction studies revealed that the material has a hexagonal structure with elementary cell dimensions of a = 11.045 kK and c = 3.984 kX, which is close to the tabular values of ThS/sub 1.7/. Continued sulfidization did not affect the structure. The product had a microhardness of 3.6 to 7 x 10/sup 7/ ohm cm, which is about twice higher than previously reported values. Tests were also carried out in a graphite boat; in that case ThOS was obtained at 800 to 1000 deg C. At 1300 deg C the brown ThS/sub 2/ was obtained. This product had a rhombic structure with lattice parameters close to those given in the literature. (TTT)
