THE DISPROPORTIONATION OF ZIRCONIUM TRICHLORIDE

Equilibrium pressures of the reaction 2ZrCl/sub 3/(c) yields ZrCl/sub 2/ (c) + ZrCl/sub 4/(g) measured by a cooling curve modification of the dew-point technique was fitted over the range 613--723 deg K, by the relation log/sub 10/p/ sub mm/=-6246/T + 11.632 plus or minus 0.05 (S.D.). Derived thermochemical data are DELTA H/sub 298/ = 30.1 plus or minus 0.5 kcal and DELTA S/sub 298/ = 39.1 plus or minus 1 eu, consistent with estimated DELTA Hf/sub 298/ZrCl/sub 3/ =-186 kcal/mole and DELTA Hf/sub 298/ZrCl/sub 2 136 kcal/mole, S/sub 298/ZrCl/ sub 3/ = 36.4 eu and S/sub 298/ZrCl/sub 2/ = 28.3 eu.
