AN INTRODUCTION TO RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES AND THEIR USE IN THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4099131
Text of talk to the Midlands Section of the Textile Institute, Nottingham, January 25, 1961. Industrial concerns in Great Britain saved three and a half million pounds in one year by the use of radioisotope techniques. Applications used by the textile industry included the use of reticuloendot gages in textile processing; radioactive static eliminators; tracer studies using radioactive phosphorus in the study of wool fibers during drafting; the control of padding processes by radioactive labeling; radioautographic methods using tritium for locating resin finish in textiles; the irradiation of nylon to reduce surface resistance; and the radiation sterilization of goat hair used in the manufacture of carpets for the elimination of bacteria and control of possible anthrax. Atomic structure is reviewed briefly and precautions necessary in handling radioactive materials are discussed. (C.H.)
