An investigation was conducted to develop new methods for the preparation of high purity yttrium. Laboratory tests were made to devise methods for preparing high-purity anhydrous yttrium chloride, for reducing this compound with sodium or lithium, and for consolidating the resulting yttrium sponge into ingots. Lithium and sodium were found to be effective reductants; however, no comparative conclusion was made. (J.R.D.)
