This paper describes the procedure which is used by French PWR plants to collect data during a hideout return test, the recommended sampling and analysis program, and the hideout return evaluation methodology. Then, the main results of hideout returns in French units are discussed. The results of hideout returns show that the total cumulative amounts of pollutants are generally low and that the tube support plate design plays an important role on the hideout and on the hideout return of the chemical species, since the amount of hideout returned sodium is much higher for steam generators with drilled hole tube support plates than for steam generators with broached hole tube support plates. Crevice chemistry of EDF plants is also evaluated through high temperature calculations in restricted-flow areas, using the MULTEQ code, which shows that in most of the cases, the environment is slightly alkaline. The impact of including or excluding precipitates for the pH calculations is also studied. Finally, the correlation between chemistry in operation and chemistry during the shutdown is examined for units with and without IGA, and for various Na/Cl molar ratios.
