Addendum to Hazards Summary Report for the GCRE Critical-Assembly Experiments
- Battelle Memorial Inst., Columbus, OH (United States)
Critical experiments are described for the ML-IB, a gas-cooled, water moderated reactor. The ML-IB is part of the Army Gas-Cooled Reactor Program and is a continuation of previous GCRE critical-assembly studies. The experiments performed with other cores in the GCRE program are listed and results which are applicable to safety are presented. The experimental program and procedures for the ML-IB study are outlined. The safety aspects of the present system have been reviewed and several power transients resulting from the sudden insertion of rather large amounts of reactivity have been carried out. It appears quite evident that this critical-assembly program can be conducted with reasonable assurance of safe operation and that no public persons are jeopardized by its operation. Consequently, approval from the Commission is requested to proceed with this experiment as described.
