SLOW-NEUTRON SCATTERING CROSS SECTIONS OF TERBIUM, YTTERBIUM, AND LUTETIUM

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D

The coherent neutron-scattering cross sections of ter- bium, ytterbium, and lutetium as determined from the neutron diffraction measurements on TbC/sub 2/. YbC/sub 2/, Yb, and Lu metals were found to be 7.2 plus or minus 0.4, 20.0 plus or minus 0.4, and 6.70 plus or minus 0.37 barns, respectively, all with amplitude of positive phase. The total scattering cross sections of Tb, Yb, and Lu and the maanetic scattering cross sections of Tb/sup +a/ Yb/sup +a/ were evaluated for thermal neutron energies. The neutron diffraction data also showed the Debye temperatures of Yb and Lu metals to be 109 plus or minus 5 deg K and 161 plus or minus 7 deg K, respectively. (auth)
