PHOTONUCLEAR STUDIES WITH MONOENERGETIC GAMMA RAYS FROM THERMAL NEUTRON CAPTURE
Monoenergetic gamma rays produced when neutrons are captured in various materials were used to study the following reactions: Ta/sup 181/( gamma ,n)Ta/sup 180//sup m/ (8.15 hr). Au/sup 19/ s/sup 7/( gamma ,n)Au/sup 196/ (5.6 days), Ho/sup 165/( gamma ,n)Ho/sup 164/ (34 min), Ag/sup 137/( gamma ,n)Ag/sup 106/ (24 min). and Nb/sup 93/( gamma ,n)Nb/sup 92/ (10 days). Cross sections for these reactions were obtained at several discrete energies between 7.5 and 10.8 Mev. Estimates were also made of the thresholds of these reactions. Two of the thresholds so obtained. Ta/sup 181/( gamma ,n)Ta/sup 180//sup m/. E/sub t/ = 7.60 plus or minus 0.08 and Nb/sup 9/ >s/sup 3/( gamma ,n)Nb/sup 92/, E/sub t/ = 8.99 plus or minus 0.04. have precisions comparable with those of previous messurements of the same quantities.
