A process is described for protecting niobium and niobium-base alloys from oxidation at high temperatures. The surface of the niobium is mechanically coated with one or more stable compounds chosen from one or more of the groups of nitrides, borides, arsenides, and oxides followed by sintering. (R.E.U.)
