Shape-retaining fuel elements having a gamma -phase uraniumalloy core and a zirconium-alloy can are manufactured by hot working at above 650 deg C a uranium-alloy ingot, that is prepared by fusion in an inert atmosphere or a vacuum, applying the zirconium-alloy can (wall thickness 0.38 to 0.76 mm), again hot wonking above 650 deg C in order to bend the can to the core, and rapidly cooling to ambient temperature. The composition of the uranium alloy is preferably 4 to 17% uranium, 7 to 16% zirconium, less than 0.15% impurities, and the balance uranium. The composition of the zirconium alloy is preferably 0.5 to 2.5% Sn, 0.05 to 1% Cr, 0.05 to 0.5% Ni, 0.05to 0.5% Fe, less than 0.05% C, less than 0.5% impurities, and the balance zirconium. (NPO)
