INFILTRATION MEASUREMENT WITH THE NEUTRON MOISTURE PROBE

Journal Article · · Soil Science (U.S.)
The moisture neutron probe was used to measure the quantity of water intake and position of wetting front during infiltration into soil artificially packed in a metal container. The increase in soil water in the soil, as measured by the neutron probe, correlated quite well with hook gage readings on water at the surface. The wetting front can be positioned (if the vertical range of the probe is known) by observing changes in readings from initial readings. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of using the neutron probe for infiltration studies are discussed. (auth)
