Preliminary work on the determination of hafnium in zirconium oxide used as reactor material is reported. The main difficulties in spectrochemical analysis of Zr0/sub 2/ for hafnium arise from two factorsi the unstable volatilization of ZrO/sub 2/ and the indistinctness of hafnium spectral lines because of heavy background. Direct-current arc excitation using a relatively large current that consumes a fair amount of sample caused a heavy background owing to successive radiation from solid particles. The intensity of hafnium ion lines was decreased by the lowering of the arc temperature effected by low ionization potential of zirconium. Various spectrographic techniques of stabilizing the volatilization and suppressing the background were examined. Spectroscopic buffer did not sufficiently suppress the background; introduction of alkali or alkali earth elements seemed to depress the intensity of hafnium lines. Excitation in different atmospheres such as oxygen, argon, and their mixture was found to be of no advantage in the determination of hafnium in zirconium oxide. (auth)
