Electrical injection simulation of SGEMP

Increasing attention has been given to the problem of predicting the response of satellites to the system-generated electromagnetic pulse (SGEMP). Results of the first SGEMP electrical injection simulation experiments on the SKYNET satellite are presented and compared them with pretest predictions. The important advantages offered by the electrical injection techniques are reviewed in light of the experimental findings. Latest advances in the state-of-the-art of injection pulsers, wide-bandwidth current probes and voltage probes, and dielectric transmission systems (dielectric waveguides and fiber optics) are high- lighted. The significance of the results lies in the conclusion that electrical simulation techniques may provide the satellite community with a non-destructive, believable test method for satellite verification.
