HIGH-TEMPERATURE, SHORT-TIME, URANIUM CARBIDE-METAL REACTIONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4093371

The relative compatibility of UC with nine metals was investigated. Samples of UC were heated in contact with W, Ta, Mo, Zircaloy-2, AISI 304L SS, Inconel, Hastelloy F, Nb-1% Zr, and Nb--33% Ta--1% Zr, for 10 min periods at 1000 to 2400 deg C. W and Mo were the least reactive metals tested. The UC-stainless steel reaction was the most rapid at all temperatures. Zr, Nb, and Ni-base alloys reacted least of the common cladding materials. Decarburization of hyperstoichiometric UC (UC/sub 1+x/) resulted in excessive carbide formation in Nb and probably in some of the other alloys. (P.C.H.)
