MAGNETISM OF EuS, EuSe AND EuTe

Journal Article · · Philips Res. Rept.
OSTI ID:4093320
The preparation, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of EuS, EuSe, and EuTe are described. EuS and EuSe are found to be purely ferromagnetic compounds with Curie temperatures of 16 and 6 deg K, respectively, whereas EuTe is antiferromagnetic with an asymptotic Curie point of -7.5 deg K and a Neel temperature of 11 deg K. It is concluded that the exchange interaction between nearest-neighbor metal ions is of a direct type. The same conclusion is drawn for MnO and MnS. The magnetization for both EuS and EuSe is measured as a function of the temperature for several field strengths in the region of 14.3 to 32.1 kOe. It appears that the dependence of the magnetization on temperature and fieldstrength can be described satisfactorily by the Weiss-field theory. For these measurements a special apparatus was used, which is described. (auth)
