RADIORESISTANT AND RECURRENT EPITHELIOMAS: RADIOTHERAPY WITH A RADIOSENSITIZER (SODIUM CYCLOHEXYLSUCCINATE) (in Italian)
By the use of sodium cyclohexylsuccinate, a substance possessing high radiosensitizing activity, it was possible to reirradiate refractory tumors with successful results. A group of 28 patients suffering from recurring epithelial skin tumors, which showed little radiosensitivity following an initial radiation treatmert, was selected. In these patients the idertical radiological treatment which had bee administered initially was repeated. To allow comparative evaluation, control measures ensured that: the recurring epithelioma had dimensions approximates the same as that of the primary epithelioma; side- effects complicating the recurring tumor, such as necrotic suppurative phenomena, were absent; a localization that would avoid the risk of radionecrosis following a second radiation treatment; finally, and most important, a sufficiently long time elapsed between the two treatments. Among the epitheliomas treated were some that had remained almost unchanged following initial therapy. Patients received 2 g cyclohexylsuccinate daily for 9 to 10 days while undergoing irradiation. Result showed a 78% tumor-eradication rate, which is high in comparison with that of relapsing epitheliomas treated by other methods. It was concluded that the biologic action of radiation was reinforced by the use of cyclohexylsuccinate An x-ray treatment, in itself ineffective or only palliative, became effective in a large percentage of cases.
