THE INFRA-RED SPECTRA OF METAL NITRATES IN ORGANIC SOLVENTS

The infrared spectra of metal nitrates in tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide solution in carbon tetrachloride and in trin-octyl amine nitrate solution in benzene are reported. The splitting of the nu /sub 3/ band of the nitrate ion was followed and frequency shifts in the solvent molecule are discussed. A comparison was made with previous measurements in 100% tri-n-butyl phosphate. From the results conclusions are drawn concerning species present in the amine nitrate phase. It is shown that the location of the NO asymmetric and symmetric stretch of the metal nitrate is independent of the solvent, but strongly dependent on the metal ion. (auth)
