In calculating the excitation cross section of ions by electrons close to the threshold energy, it is necessary to take into account distortion of the electron wave by the coulomb field of the ion. With the use of the Born approximation, the excitation cross sections were calculated on a digital computer for the 1s-2s and the 1s-3s transitions in hydrogen-like ions having a charge (Z) of 2 to 10. The results show that the excitation cross section is almost inversely proportional to Z/sup 4/ for the same transition in atoms with different values of Z, or in other words, to the square of the energy of the transition. This proportionality holds for all transitions, not only for s-s transitions. The angular distribution of the scattered electrons is non- isotropic, and has a maximum in the backward direction near the excitation threshold. (TTT)
