Dry seeds of Triticum monococcum, T. dicoccum, T. persicum, T. vulgare, Aegilops squarrosa, Avena strigosa, A. barbata, and A. sativa were irradiated in the beam of the Japan Research Reactor No. 1 (JRR-1). The radiations were mainly thermal neutrons, with contaminating resonance neutrons, fast neutrons, and gamma rays. Seed germination was not affected by a dose of 9.2 x 10/sup 11/n (th)/cm/sup 2/ or 1.8 x 10/sup 12/n(res)/cm/sup 2/, but was clearly disturbed by 9.2 x 10/sup 12/n(th)/cm/sup 2/, excepting hexaploid species. Seedling heights of diploid species were decreased distinctly by 1.8 x 10/sup 12/n(res)/cm/sup 2/ and extremely by 9.2 x 10/sup 12/n(th)/cm/sup 2/ doses, but tetra- and hexaploid species were more tolerant than diploids. Moreover, the experiments indicated that Avena is generally more resistant than Triticum. Both length and width of the first, second, and third leaf blades were reduced by certain dosages, the first leaf being most resistant and the third most sensitive. This suggests that leaves in different developmental stages show different responses to radiation. The LD/sub 50/ for thermal neutrons, x rays, and gamma rays were determined for each species. By comparison of the survival rate 100 days after sowing, a dose of about 2.1 x 10/sup 8/n(th)/cm/sup 2/ of thermal neutrons (plus other contaminating radiations) in JRR-1 was calculated to have the effect equivalent to 1 r of x or gamma rays.
