DEVELOPMENT OF DIRECTIONAL DETECTOR FOR HIGH-ENERGY NEUTRONS. Final Report

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4089678· OSTI ID:4089678

>A directional detector for neutrons with energies of 40-120 Mev is described. Proton recoils generated by neutrons incident upon a hydrogenous material (scintillation plastic) are analyzed by scintillation counters scanned by photomultipliers. Plastic scintillation fluor surrounding the system and scanned by photomultipliers serves as an anticoincidence detector to eliminate charged particles. Coincidence circuitry identifies neutral particle events. Preliminary runs indicate an efficiency of about 1%, good recoil proton discrimination, and good directional response. (D.C.W.)
