DEHYDRATION AND DISSOCIATION OF ZIRCONIUM HYDROXIDE AND HAFNIUM HYDROXIDE (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Nippon Kagaku Zasshi (Japan) Formerly Nippon Kagaku Kaishi (1921- 47) Merged with Kogyo Kagaku Zasshi to form Nippon Kagaku Kaishi
The behavior of hafnium hydroxide in dehydration and pyrolysis was examined and compared with zirconium hydroxide. The end products of dehydration of both compounds at room temperature are M(OH)/sub 4/ + 2H/sub 2/O in the air, M(OH)/sub 4/ over calcium chloride, and MO/sub 2/ + 1.5H/sub 2/O over concentrated sulfuric acid (M is zirconium or hafnium). The curves of pyrolysis of both compounds containing considerable amount of water are similar, having the breaks corresponding to the composition MO(OH)/sub 2/ at approximately 140 deg (zirconium) and 155 deg (hafnium). The breaks, however, disappear when dried hydroxides are used. (auth)
