CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS IN COATED REFRACTORY METALS AND ALLOYS

Journal Article · · Metals Eng. Quart.
OSTI ID:4089007

The need for oxidation-resistant refractory metal sheet structures for hypersonic and re-entry vehicles resulted in some significant advances in coatings for molybdenum, niobium, tantalum, and tungsten. Manufacturing methods for large silicide-coated molybdenum parts are under development. Silicide coatings for niobium are being optimized for reliability and reproducibility. Silicides, but particularly aluminide coatings, appear promising for protecting tantalum. Silicide coatings were investigated for tungsten. Standardized testing procedures are under study, which, upon adoption, will advance the development of coatings. (auth)
