EFFECT OF $gamma$-RADIATION UPON SUSCEPTIBILITY OF POTATO TUBERS TO PHYTOPATHOGENIC MICROORGANISMS (in Russian)

It was found that susceptibility of irradiated potatoes to infectious diseases increases in proportion to the dose of the ionizing radiation and is also dependent on the presence of mechanical injuries in the tubers. The reduction of the wound reactions as manifested in the suppression of the capacity to form wound periderm at the sites of mechanical injury only increases infection susceptibility of the irradiated tubers. The major causes of reduced potato resistance are however the disturbances elicited by irradiation in various links of metabolism that reduce the response of the tissues to the infection. Changes in carbohydrate metabolism were revealed as well is in respiration and in the water retaining capacity of cell colloids of the irradiated tubers. To reduce the adverse effect of radiation upon the resistance of tubers these should be of highest initial quality and gamma rays should be used in as small doses as possible. (auth)
