A critique is presented of an analysis by Penn and Martell (J. Geophys. Res., 68: 4195-207(1963)), in which it was concluded that practically all the fallout in the southeastern U. S. in late Sept. 1961 resulted from radioactivity vented to the atmosphere from an underground nuclear test at the Nevada Test Site on Sept. 15, 1961. A reply to the critique is also included.
