IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO PRESSURIZED WATER NUCLEAR REACTOR PLANTS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4086468
A pressurized-water reactor is described in which the water acts both as coolant and moderator. The design is for a compact reactor with relatively high thermal efficiency, so that, for example, it is suitable for propelling vessels. It is characterized by the provision of at least one jet pump within the casing, the jet tube of which is so directed that it recirculates some of the water in the casing through a path consisting of the core and the space at the sides of the core. As a result of this construction, the rate of flow through the core is greater than the flow through the high-temperature circuit of the heat exchanger. Therefore it is possible to reduce the size of the outer part of the circuit and a smaller circulating pump may be used. (M.C.G.)
