Na$sub 2$SO$sub 4$ induced attack of Ni--20Cr--2ThO$sub 2$

The microstructural features of the reaction products formed during accelerated attack on Ni--20Cr--2ThO$sub 2$ in the presence of Na$sub 2$SO$sub 4$ are examined and related to the oxidation behavior of the alloy. A transient stage of accelerated attack occurs, corresponding to the growth of an NiO scale. Internal chromium sulfide particles are observed to be present in the alloy. Steady-state kinetics result from the formation of a Cr$sub 2$$O$$sub 3$ inner layer which controls the growth of additional oxide. (IAA)
