The influence of chronic radiation illness on the course of fractures of bones was studied using two groups of 20 rabbits (control and experimental). After a right forearm fracture, the process of healing was studied clinically and roentgenologically for 3, 7, 15, 30, 45, 60, 80, 100, 120, and 140 days affer the fracture for the control group. The experimental group (prior to the fractures), was exposed to small doses (20 roentgens) of x radiation for 60-62 days for a total dose of 1200 roentgens to obtain an experimental model of chronic radiation illness. After fracture, clinical tests similar to the controls were made. Experimental details for various clinical tests were presented. Comparing the experimental with the control group, it was possible to note the lag of the process of callosity for the irradiated rabbits in the first 7-14 days and then the tempo of the reparation process grew rapidly. At 21 days, the x-ray data for both were essentially similar, but later on the rebuilding of the bone callosity for the irradiated animals went even somewhat more rapidly than for the control group. With a histological study, it was established that for animals with chronic radiation illness the process of formation of the elementary bone callosity and its rebuilding were somewhat delayed. (TCO)
