The properties of radioisotopes that make them valuable for use in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries are briefly reviewed. The utilization of tracers in petroleum cracking, manufacture of nitric acid, and study of mixing and dilution processes is illustrated. The applicability of tracer techniques to analytical and biological chemistry, especially with the Hevesy and Paneth method, is discussed. The economic advantages offered by the use of radioisotopes in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries are indicated. (J.S.R.)
