STUDIES ON THE TRI-n-OCTYLPHOSPHINE OXIDE COMPLEX OF URANYL NITRATE

Journal Article · · Journal of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry (England) Merged with Inorg. Nucl. Chem. Lett. to form Polyhedron
The stoichiometry of the tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) complex of uranyl nitrate was established by extraction studies. On the basis of these studies, the formula complex. The complex possesses a high degree of stability. Approximate values of DELTA H, DELTA F, and DELTA S were obtained at 25 deg C for the extraction reactions of uranyl nitrate and nitric acid into TOPO- cyclohexane. The complex was found to be labile with respect to uranium exchange and possesses a dipole moment of about 8 Debye units. The molecular weights of the complex in cyclohexane and benzene were found to be significantly different. The spectra of the complex were obtained in the visible and the infrared regions (5000-700 cm/sup 1/ 2-15 mu ). (auth)
