THE EXTRACTION OF RARE EARTH NITRATES WITH TRI-n-BUTYL PHOSPHATE (TBP)

Equilibrium data on rare earth nitrates in tri-n-butyl phosphate are given. The results are consistent with the formation of a trisolvate, Ln(NO/sub 3/)/sub 3/. 3TBP, in the organic phase. It was confirmed that the separation factors increase with saturation of the organic phase. The partition coefficients of trace concentrations of rare earths, in the presence of macroscopic quantities of other earths, showed a maximum at Ho when the organic phase approached saturation.
