The relaxation of vibrationally excited HF and DF by O, Cl, and F atoms at T=300$sup 0$K has been measured by the laser-induced fluorescence method. The rate constants in units of cm$sup 3$ molecule$sup -1$xsec$sup -1$ for HF(v=1) are k/sub O-HF/ = 3.1+-0.6x10$sup -12$, k/sub Cl-HF/ = 7.4+-1.6x10$sup -13$, k/sub F- HF/ = 2.8+-0.6x10$sup -13$; for DF(v=1) they are k/sub O-DF/ = 7.8+-2.2x10$sup - 12$, k/sub Cl-DF/ = 2.0+-0.3x10$sup -12$, k/sub F-DF/ = 6.5+-1.2x10$sup -13$. The results provide further evidence for the validity of a vibronic-to- translational energy transfer mechanism. Atom transfer reactions are shown to be of no importance. (AIP)
