EXPERIMENTS RELATING TO THE MECHANISM OF THE DIFFUSION OF XENON-133 IN URANIUM DIOXIDE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4084053
ABS>The emission of xenon-133 from samples of uranium dioxide/yttrium oxide and thorium oxide/yttrium oxide solid solutions containing up to 30 mole% of yttrium oxide was investigated by heating in the range 800 to 1600 deg C after a short irradiation. It is concluded that the migration of xenon-133 in these systems does not rely on the presence of vacancies on the oxygen sub-lattice. The results of a series of experiments on the emission of xenon-133 from a stressed sample of uranium dioxide suggest that dislocations in the lattice also play no part in the migration of xenon-133.
