The elastic, plastic flow, and fracture characteristics of an extruded Zircaloy-2 and an extruded Zircaloy-4 material were investigated as a function of stress state, using thin-walled cylindrical specimens subjected to various combinations of axial tension, internal pressure, and external pressure. Constant-stress-ratio tests were conducted at stress states varying from uniaxial tangential tension to combined axial tension plus tangential compression. The mechanical properties of the extruded Zircaloy-2 and Zircaloy-4 materials were found to be similar. These materials exhibited highly anisotropic elastic and plastic flow behaviors. The specimens ruptured at the positive stress ratios, and exhibited noticeable fracture anisotropy. The negative stress ratio tests were not conducted to fracture. A mathematical expression was used to correlate the anisotropic elastic behaviors, and graphical analyses were used to correlate the anisotropic plastic flow and fracture data. It was found that for positive stress ratios, the fracture ductility, (expressed as the numerically largest logarithmic fracture strain), and the true average fracture stress, (expressed as effective stress), decreased with increasing biaxiality. The minimum fracture ductility at 580 deg F was 40%. A comparison of the uniaxial flow behaviors obtained for these extruded materials to the uniaxial flow properties of rolled Zircaloy-4 plate, tested parallel and transverse to rolling, indicated that the extruded materials were noticeably more anisotropic than the rolled material. However, the manner in which the degree of anisotropy varied with deformation was found to be similar for the extruded and rolled materials. (auth)
