OXYGEN AND CARBON ISOTOPE RATIOS IN COEXISTING CALCITES AND DOLOMITES FROM RECENT AND ANCIENT SEDIMENTS

Journal Article · · Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta (England)
The O/sup 18//O/sup 16/ and C/sup 13//C/sup 12/ ratios of coexisting sediment ary dolomites and calcium carbonates from a variety of environments, modes of formation, and geological ages were measured. The data reflect the processes of dolomitization of calcium carbonates and their subsequent history. Dolomites usually have delta O/sup 18/ values characteristic of marine calcium carbonates or values of diagenetically altered marine limestones. Invariably the delta O/sup 18/ of dolomite are the same or greater than that of the coexisting calcite. This is in accordance with previously postulated mechanisms based on isotope measurements of hydrothermal and of laboratory synthesized cogenetic calcites and dolomites. The carbon isotope values of the measured carbonates are usually within the range found for marine limestones. (auth)
