COSMIC-RAY PRODUCED MANGANESE-53 IN IRON METEORITES

Journal Article · · Geochim. et Cosmochim. Acta
The radioactivity of manganese in three iron meteorites was measured. The activities found were ascribed to cosmogenic Mn/sup 53/). The meteorite samples were dissolved in aqua regia and a small portion of the solution set aside -for chemical analysis. After the analysis, the manuganese was counted as MnO/sub 2/ with a low-level beta flow counter. The samples were also counted for gamma activity to eliminate any effect of Mn/sup 54/ contamination. Results showed considerably more Mn/sup 53/ activity than predicted by Sheline. This indicated that the low-energy secondary nucleon flux in meteorites is much larger than was previously assumed.
