RESEARCH PROGRAM FOR THE LONG TERM TESTING OF CYLINDRICAL DIODES AND THE RADIATION OF FUEL AND INSULATOR. Quarterly Progress Report, June 18, 1963-September 17, 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4083080
A program to provide direct evidence of thermionic converter life dependence on variables of spacing and operating temperatures, using configurations representative of anticipated thermionic fuel element designs, is described. Plans for a basic test device consisting of a thermionic converter using cylindrical emitter-collector geometry are discussed. Work toward fabrication and assembly of three identical converters during the period is reported. Other work is reported on plans for Cs irradiation and environmental testing of UO/sub 2/ clad with W--26% Re alloy. Vacuum environmental testing of UO/sub 2/--W dispersions clad with W--26% Re alloy is also planned. Physics calculations concerning the use of UO/sub 2/--W dispersions in thermionic reactors were initiated. A summary of core data for a 5-Mw(e) system at 10 w/cm/ sup 2/ is included. Plans for irradiation of encapsulated alumina insulator specimens at 1000 to 1200 deg C are discussed. (J.R.D.)
