INTERACTIONS OF NEGATIVE K-MESONS IN NUCLEAR EMULSION AT ENERGIES (0 / DIVIDED BY/ 180) Mev
Analyses of 384 K/sup -/-meson interactions with complex nuclei of the emulsion, obtained by following 102.93 meters of K/sup -/ track length, are presented. The average mean free path in the energy interval 30 to 180 MBv is found to be (26.82 plus or minus 1.39) cm. The variation of the interaction mean free path with K/sup -/ energy is discussed. A study of K/sup -/ inelastic scattering from emulsion nuclei was made and it is concluded that the nuclear potential for K/sup -/-mesons is strongly attractive. The energy spectra of charged pions and hyperons emitted from K/sup -/ interactions at these energies are discussed. It is shown that with increasing energy of the K/sup -/-meson the fractions, pi /sup -// pi /sup +/ and SIGMA /sup -// SIGMA /su p +/, also increase. The rates for various K/sup -/-single nucleon reactions were determined. A comparison of these rates at different K/sup -/ energies shows an enhancement in the direct LAMBDA /sup 0/ production.
