Polymerization of styrene was carried out in the presence of an additive by irradiation of Co/sup 60/ gamma rays in vacuo at room temperature. A value of acceleration efficiency which depends on the kind of the additive, R/sup E/(R/ sup E/ = R/sup P/ x R/sup M/, where R/sup P/ is the ratio of the polymerization rate and R/sup M/ is that of the viscosity average molecular weight of the polymer with an additive and without it in the same experimental condition), is obtained from the results of the polymerization reaction. An additive which has two functional groups in the molecule is added to styrene monomer in a concentration of 0.1 mole/l. The additive, for example, when it has a halogen and a hydroxy group, only the hydroxy group shows an effect on the value of R/sup P/, whether it is an aliphatic or an aromatic compound. An additive that has a functional group in the molecule is added to styrene monomer in the concentration range from 0.02 to 0.2 mole/l. Both the values of R/sup P/ and R/sup M/ change with the concentration of the additive, but the value of R/sup E/ is almost independent of the concentration of the additive except in the case of nitrobenzene. The values of chain transfer constant of the additives are also calculated. (auth)
