ON THE AGE OF NEUTRONS FROM FISSION IN WATER (in Russian)

The question is considered as to whether absorption of neutrons in the source may account for differences between the calculated value for the age in water (to 1.47 ev) (26.0 plus or minus 0.5 cm/sup 2/) and the measured value (27.3 plus or minus 1.0 cm/sup 2/). Using a three-group method in a planar geometry with a source plate of U/sup 235/ the slowing down of fission neutrons in water was calculated, allowing for absorption in the U/sup 235/ plate at low energies. As an approximation in the middle energy range the correct Gaussian form for the spatial dependence of the slowing down density was replaced by a simple exponential having the same r/sup 2/. It was found that for a zero plate thickness the calculated age is 26.9 cm/sup 2/, while for a thickness of 0.18 cm the calculated age is 31.8 cm/sup 2/. Thus, it was concluded that source absorption can account for the discrepancy. (TTT)
