ON MAGNETO-HYDRODYNAMIC SHOCK WAVES

The propagation of a magnetohydrodynamic wave of finite amplitude is discussed. The magnetic field and the density are such as to make the gyrofrequency for ions and electrons small compared to the collision frequency for the particles. With propagation perpendicular to the magnetic field, it turns out that a simple differential equation (Burger's equation) for the wave motion can be obtained by linearizing the diffusion terms and taking into account the nontinear effects in a first approximation in the Machnumber. This equation can be solved exactly. The structure of the shock wavee is discussed briefly. (auth)
