These experiments were investigated to study the relative importance of hydromagnetic and electrostatic instabilities. Experiments are being carried out in linear apparatas in which pinched and unpinched (hard core) discharges are studied. Results are given of experiments performed with hydrogen (pinch and unpinch) and argon (pinch), which show the unpinch to be more stable than pinch, in qualitative agreement with theory. In unpinch discharge the instabilities begin near the cathode. (B.O.G.)
