RADIATION EFFECTS IN SOLIDS. Report for the Period April 1, 1963-March 31, 1964

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4081421
Investigations of the general types of point defects produced by x- irradiation have continued with particular emphasis being placed on distingnishing between Schottky and Frenkel disorder. Asymmetric line broadening was observed in all materials investigated, that is LiF, NaCl, KCl, KBr, and KI. Results indicate that the small amount of line broadening is not due to panticle size effects but is associated with lattice strain. The thermal expansion coefficient is apparently increased by x-irradiation, probably by relaxations around point defects. In an effort to characterize interstitial defects investigations are being made of annealings at low temperatures. Information is also included on: F center formation kinetics at room temperature, plastic deformation of lithium fluoride crystals, M band formation at low temperatures, defect production by low energy photons, and interaction of dislocations with charge defects.
