It is pointed out that present experiments on the production of single Dalitz pnirs in the decay of the neutral pion may yield some information about its electromagnetic structure. It is shown by means of a dispersion relation that the distribution of single Dalitz pairs in terms of the virtual photon mass is modified by a simple linear function containing only one uksnown parameter, a, which would be of observable magnitude if pion intermediate states give large contributions to the dispersicn relation. It is also found that, independent of any assumptions about the pi /sup 0/ structure, the branching ratio for the channel pi /sup 0/ yields e/sup +/ + e/sup -/ must be greater than 4.7 10/sup - 8/. The rate of this decay mode is surprisingly independent of the high energy behavior of the pi /sup 0/ electromagnetic structure. (auth)
