THE TECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS OF LARGE FISSION PRODUCT BETA SOURCES. Quarterly Report for the Period October 1 to December 31, 1960

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4080629
Cerium frit was prepared to study the effect of milling conditions on particle size distribution of the powdered frit. No appreciable effect was found in addition of small amounts of chloride on the leachability of cerium frit. Sources of Pm/sup 147/ and Ce/sup 144/ were prepared, and some dosimetry studie s were conducted. Techniques were developed for preparing pellets of fused frit for leach tests. A study was conducted of the radiation-induced graiting of styrene-methacrylic acid to polypropylene in the monomer-wetted (as opposed to the monomer-immersed) polymer system. A preliminary engineering design and cost estimate are included for a pilotscale beta irradiator to be used in the graft polymerization. (auth)
