Lithium is precipitated as insoluble fluoride, phosphate, borate, oxalate, or preferably carbonate in the presence of a 50 to 100% excess of the sodium or potassium salt of an organic acid, prefersbly EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) or NTA (ritrilo-triacetic acid). The pH of the reactive components is kept between 7 and 12. The acid forms soluble complexes with most of the cations which are present as impurities; Mn, Mg, Al, Fe, Ca, Ba, Sr, etc. The organic acid is periodically regenerated from the residual solution, and recycled as sodium or potassium salts.
